The investment casting process starts before wax reaches a die. The drawing must explain what the component does, which surfaces locate it in an assembly and what condition the customer expects at delivery. Those decisions influence pattern design, machining stock and inspection, so a successful order connects engineering review to every later operation.
Translate the drawing into a manufacturing agreement
The foundry reviews geometry, alloy, production quantity and acceptance requirements. Dimensions that control fit should be distinguished from general cast dimensions. A machined sealing face, for example, needs a clear datum relationship to the rest of the component rather than an isolated surface-finish note.
This stage is also the right time to discuss features that may need a core, separate machining or a design adjustment. Changes made before tooling is released are easier to evaluate than changes requested after sample castings exist.
Patterns establish the shape, while the shell supports it
Wax patterns are typically produced in tooling and assembled onto a feed system. A refractory shell is built around the assembly, then the pattern material is removed. The resulting cavity receives the metal. Pattern handling, shell preparation and drying are manufacturing controls, not interchangeable steps with one universal recipe.
The Investment Casting Institute describes this expendable-pattern sequence in its process introduction. Actual operating conditions must suit the foundry system, alloy and component rather than being copied from a generic temperature table.
Pouring is followed by several value-adding operations
After filling and solidification, the shell is removed and the individual parts are separated from the feed system. Gate removal and surface cleaning prepare the component for subsequent operations. Depending on the purchase specification, heat treatment, straightening and machining may still be required.
It is useful to show these operations separately in a quotation. A buyer who needs a ready-to-assemble component should not discover after sampling that drilling, heat treatment or dimensional reporting was outside the quoted scope.
Samples close the loop with the original drawing
First-article inspection establishes whether the manufacturing route meets the agreed requirements. Results should identify the drawing revision and distinguish measured cast surfaces from machined features. Any approved departure needs to remain traceable when repeat orders are released.
